Iron is one of the most abundant metals on earth.  Iron replaced bronze for making weapons and decorative items because of this.  Iron is not just iron.  There are various types depending on the carbon content.

Cast iron contains from 2 to 4% carbon.  It is hard, black, and less corrosive than steel.  Wrought iron contains less than .25% carbon.  It is very malleable and was used for years to make decorative items such as antique iron chandeliers.

However, a newer product called 'mild steel' looks a lot like wrought iron but is cheaper with less corrosion resistance.  When you put two items together, one of wrought iron and one of mild steel, you can see and feel the difference.  The wrought iron is heavier and if old, may have some pitting.
